Dental Implants SmileWhether you've lost a tooth due to an injury, infection or decay, filling the gaps in your smile as soon as possible is important for your oral health. Dental implants restore your entire tooth and offer several important benefits. Your South Glastonbury, CT, dentist Dr. Steven Hinchey can help you decide if implants are a good option for you.

How do dental implants work?

Dental implants replace your missing tooth roots and support an artificial tooth called a crown. They're the only type of restoration that restores missing teeth from top to bottom.

Implants are tiny posts made of titanium, a biocompatible metal, or Zirconia, a ceramic material, that osseointegrate, or bond, to bone. Osseointegration begins as soon as the implants are added to your jawbone during a minor oral surgical procedure and usually takes three to six months.

Crowns may be added once bonding is complete or immediately following the implant procedure in some cases. If you'll need to wait to receive your implants, you'll be fitted with a temporary bridge or crown to cover the gap in your smile. Your Glastonbury dentist will make an impression of your mouth that will be used to create a permanent crown.

What advantages do implants offer?

Your new crown is connected to an implant that's firmly rooted in your jaw, which makes it feel and function like a natural tooth. No matter what you eat, your new tooth won't slip or irritate your gums. You also won't notice any decrease in biting power, a problem that can occur with other restoration options.

Jawbone resorption, a problem that occurs when the bone begins to shrink, can occur when the bone is no longer stimulated by tooth roots. Once your implants are in place, they'll take over for your roots, helping you avoid the consequences of a shrinking jawbone, such as tooth loss or facial sagging.

Dental implants are an equally good option no matter how many teeth you need to replace. Implant-supported dentures or bridges restore multiple missing teeth, but don't require a separate implant for every tooth in the dentures or bridge. In fact, as few as four implants can be used to secure an entire upper or lower denture.
